In most countries around the world, especially where many mothers are among political and conscience prisoners, human rights (rights for protection, special rights as a mother, etc.) have never been respected.
Several human rights organizations and organizations working on the issues of imprisoned mothers and children have issued a statement calling for the mark of July 17 as “The Day of Iranian Mothers in Prison”.
This day would give a small opportunity to remember those imprisoned mothers who have suffered from injustice or were under pressure all the time, beginning with the time of the Pahlavi regime to the dark 1980’s and beyond.
And if a mother was imprisoned because of her civil and social activities, surprising her by abusing her maternal feelings is considered as violence against a human being.
It has been emphasized in the statement that it would be a great chance to remember those mothers and to be familiar with their pain and problems, the feelings that they felt after they lost communication with their children.
By remembering these mothers in prison we can alter the traditional outlook, change the attitude of judicial systems towards mothers and make them respect their rights.
The statement says:
This day gives many opportunities to create a fundamental basis to protect the rights and needs of mothers imprisoned due to political, religious and any other reasons; to pay attention to them, to create better conditions.
It also prevents cases of additional pressure on imprisoned women and gives us a chance to apply to government and government organization.
July 17 is also chosen for the reason that the human rights and women’s rights activist, Nargiz Mohammadi, who is currently in custody, sent her children to another country to stay with their father, because of the pressure from the security forces.
These are the groups that have proposed to mark “The Day of Iranian Mothers in Prison”:
The Campaign of Human Rights Defenders, The International Human Rights center in Iran, The Nonprofit Organization for Prisoners, and The Free Nages International Campaign Group.
